Every young poker player in the world dreams about becoming a professional poker player. That is, until they actually attempt to do it. Even some of the older players out there dream of being pros. Once again; that is until they attempt to make it as a pro. As exciting and great as it may seem, being a poker pro is not all that it is cracked up to be. In fact; it can and usually is a very stressful lifestyle. For every successful professional poker players, there are uncountable unsuccessful professional poker players.
What is a Poker Pro?
The first thing to realize is the definition of a poker professional. You do not have to play in the WSOP and be on television in order to be labeled a poker pro. Actually, you don’t even have to be good to be labeled a poker pro. In order to be a poker pro, you just have to play poker for a living. If that is all you do for an income (even if you are not making one), then you could technically be considered a poker pro. So, do not think that you have to be on TV to be a pro.
The real question is not, what it takes to become a poker pro; it is…
What it takes to become a Successful Poker Pro
Just about anyone can be a poker pro, but only few people can be successful poker pros. It takes a lot of work and a lot of persistence to be successful and make a full time income playing poker professionally.
If you are going to be a poker pro, you must have nerves of steel and you cannot be afraid to lose money. There is no way you can be a pro if you are afraid to lose money. At the same time, you have to be able to manage your money and risk it in a smart way. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline and poker skills are only the half of it. It is one thing to play poker for fun, but a whole other thing to play poker professionally. Honestly, it is not as easy as it looks. You could be the best poker player in the world, but that doesn’t mean you have what it takes to become a successful poker pro.
There will be times that you don’t want to play poker; but you still have to. Not only that, but you have to play good. Sometimes you will not feel like playing poker but you will have to play the best poker of your life for 14 hours straight. They say too much of anything is not good. When you are a poker pro, you have no other choice. You will be called to play poker 80 hours a week. If you haven’t done it before, go try playing poker for 24 straight hours. Once you are done, go to sleep for a while and go do it again. After that, decide if you still like poker as much?
Those are the kinds of things that professional poker players have to do. Remember that they pay the bills with poker. There is not a lot of room for stupidity, and they must have a tremendous amount of discipline. You don’t just go play in the WSOP once a year and go golfing for the rest of the year. Poker is an all year round full time job. You have to love the game. Not only that, but you have to be a very special person to have what it takes to become a successful poker pro.
