2013 Poker Hall of Fame Finalists Revealed By WSOP

Two of the 10 finalists for the Poker Hall of Fame will be given poker’s grandest honor on November 3, 2013 when they are inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame during a special ceremony at the Wine Tasting Room inside the Rio. This year’s inductees will join fellow poker greats like Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, and Johnny Moss, cementing their legacies in poker.

The WSOP’s press release detailed the voting process from this point forward, as well as the aspects the voters are asked to consider:

The above list of names will be submitted to the 19 living Hall of Fame members and an 18-person media panel later this month for voting. Only these 37 individuals cast votes for induction.

The criteria they will consider in their vote are as follows:

- A player must have played poker against acknowledged top competition

- Be a minimum of 40 years old at time of nomination

- Played for high stakes

- Played consistently well, gaining the respect of peers

- Stood the test of time

- Or, for non-players, contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results.

This year’s finalists include:

  • Chris Bjorin
  • Humberto Brenes
  • David Chiu
  • Thor Hansen
  • Jennifer Harman
  • Mike Matusow
  • Tom McEvoy
  • Carlos Mortensen
  • Scotty Nguyen
  • Huckleberry Seed

Mike Matusow, Humberto Brenes, and Carlos Mortensen are all first-time nominees –which makes it unlikely they will be inducted this time around, even though Mortensen is a no-brainer to be a hall of famer down the road.

Unlike recent years, there isn’t really a “shoe-in” this time around. From the above list I would personally give the nod to Jennifer Harman and Carlos Mortensen, but if we are talking about what the actual voters will do I would say that Chris Bjorin, Thor Hansen, David Chiu, and Jennifer Harman are the prohibitive favorites:

  • Jennifer Harman 1/2 to be inducted

I thought Harman would get in last year, but the HOF voters went old-school on us and selected Eric Drache and Sailor Roberts. This year there is no “nostalgia” pick to select (which is depressing to me considering there are still many “old-timers” who deserve to be inducted) so I think this is Harman’s year.

  • David Chiu 3/1 to be inducted

Chiu’s profile got raised this summer when he won his 5th WSOP bracelet, which had a lot of people reexamining his stats over the years.

  • Chris Bjorin 4/1 to be inducted

Bjorin’s stats stack-up nicely to Chiu’s, and his European ties could edge him past Chiu for some voters who are looking to globalize the Hall of Fame –Can someone explain to me how Marcel luske isn’t a finalist???

  • Thor Hansen 5/1 to be inducted

Like Bjorin, Hansen is one of the trailblazers for European poker. His ongoing, public fight with cancer has seen his accomplishments and larger than life personality brought into the public eye.

A Look at the Finalists for the 2012 Poker HOF

The ballots have been cast (well the e-ballots anyway) and the 10 leading vote-getters chosen by the fans have been tallied to create the short-list of 10 finalists for the Poker Hall of Fame Class of 2012. The finalists announced on Thursday had to meet the Poker Hall of Fame eligibility criteria and now will be voted on by the living Poker HOF members and a selected panel of poker media, where two people will likely get the nod.

Here is a look at the 10 players who made the final cut (in alphabetical order) and how I feel they will fare when the final votes are tallied:

  1. Chris Bjorin
  2. David Chiu
  3. Eric Drache
  4. Thor Hansen
  5. George Hardie
  6. Jennifer Harman-Traniello
  7. John Juanda
  8. Tom Mcevoy
  9. Scotty Nguyen
  10. Brian “Sailor” Roberts

In recent years the panel is allowed to vote for three players and can dole out up to 10 points total amongst the three.

The Front-Runners:

  • Jennifer Harman-Traniello

By far the most accomplished player in this year’s class, Harman is perhaps the best female player the game has ever seen.

  • John Juanda

Juanda is a surefire Hall of Famer, the question is; is it going to happen this year?

  • Brian “Sailor” Roberts

Roberts was a “write-in” nomination by a current Hall of Famed member according to the WSOP.com website, and it’s highly likely he will be honored and inducted posthumously by his longtime friend and poker partner Doyle Brunson.

  • Eric Drache

Drache is on my short-list of industry people who deserve to be in the Poker Hall of Fame, and hopefully this won’t be a one-time nomination for him.

  • Thor Hansen

Hansen’s poker resume is borderline, but considering his standing in the poker world, being one of the first big-time European players, and his current battle against cancer, Hansen has a puncher’s chance of getting in this year.

  • Tom McEvoy

McEvoy is a perennial finalist and this may very well be his year.

Wait Until Next Year:

  • George Hardie

Hardie was one of the people responsible for the California poker scene, but in the grand scheme of poker California is far behind Las Vegas and there are plenty of Las Vegas poker industry-types that are still waiting for a HOF slot (see Eric Drache above).

  • David Chiu

Looking at Chiu’s stats you can see why he was nominated, but as a still-active player in his first year as a finalist he is unlikely to get the nod in 2012 –although he is a deserving addition in the future.

  • Chris Bjorin

Bjorin is in the unenviable position of being the “Not Thor Hansen Euro” on the nominee list. If a Euro player is getting in this year it will be Hansen due to his failing health.

  • Scotty Nguyen

2008 $50k HORSE Championship; enough said. The memory of this moment is still too fresh for an otherwise deserving player.
